Dry Mouth – Complications

Dry Mouth and Candida

Mr X had a long-standing dry mouth. Mr X found it difficult to access a general dentist and he was struggling with his mouth. A specialist Oral Medicine opinion was asked for. This concluded that Mr X did not have Sjogren’s Syndrome and that his oral dryness was due to many different things. These included prescribed medication and some underlying medical conditions.

At the time of presentation Mr X had oral candidiasis (‘thrush infection’ – illustrated). The Oral Medicine specialist was able to make a number of recommendations that improved the comfort of Mr X’s mouth. Multi-disciplinary care included an opinion from specialists in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Surgery. This led to treatment for dental decay and gum disease as well as some dental extractions for badly decayed teeth.
