Resources

Faculty of Dental Surgery Guidance

The Oral Medicine guidance that was drawn up in collaboration with BISOM fellows and members has been placed on the FDS website (https://www.rcseng.ac.uk/dental-faculties/fds/coronavirus/#guidance). The aim of this guidance is  to encourage a consistent approach to the provision of Oral Medicine care within all dental settings while recognising the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presents.

The guides are intended to assist oral health care professionals in triaging and managing patients and should be used in conjunction with national guidance relating to good practice and infection prevention and control. National guidance is available online for EnglandScotlandWales and Northern Ireland.

Managing patients on immunosuppressant therapy

We are aware that members of BISOM are receiving enquiries relating to patients taking immunosuppressant therapy and the risk of COVID-19 (coronavirus) infection. BISOM advises members to refer to the guidance provided by our affiliated medical specialties, this includes advice on which patients should practice shielding:

The British Society for Rheumatology

The British Association of Dermatologists

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) has released documentation from NHS England to assist in notifying patients at high risk who should practice shielding. Whilst the 4 UK nations have agreed this approach, the logistics and letters for the devolved administrations have not been finalised and further information will follow on these.

BISOM will continue to monitor this evolving situation and issue further advice if necessary.
